After a little bit of research, I managed to narrow it down to 4 mobos that fit nicely into my budget and seem to meet all my needs. This is my current build. Below is a list of the mobos that I'm considering putting into it. The processor is still up in the air, but my main problem before was the mobo so I thought I would pick this first then the processor.

Biostar A960G+
ASRock 960GM/U3S3 FX
ASRock 880GM-LE FX
MSI 760GM-P21 (FX)

What is your exact budget for the motherboard and CPU?

Of the four, the best one would likely be the 960.. and you could probaby put a 6300 in it.

I would like to keep it under $200. But a couple bucks over won't hurt.

what are you actually going to be doing with this computer? work? movies? games?

I once built a machine based on mobo features, and it SUCKED ASS so much that I took it all apart and returned the parts for a refund within a week.

do you need multiple graphics card support? a lot of sata ports?

Something like that would likely work, and be under budget.

I'm using the computer mostly for college and work, but I would like to play games. That is why I put a Radeon 7850 into the case and a bigger power supply in case I wanted to expand later. On that note, I don't think I need multiple graphic cards and not a ton of sata ports.

if it's that simple, I'd almost be tempted to look at an ITX build with a single 2-wide GPU and 2-3 hard drives. compact so easy to move / store / hide, and if you don't NEED additional card slots then you're not really missing out on anything by going ITX. heck, the mATX boards you linked all take just 2 ram sticks anyways, same as ITX.

only downside is there's no AM3+ in an ITX format, so it's i3 / i5 haswell only.

for some unknown reason, I'd buy the ass-rock stuff and make fun of the name each time I power it up. maybe cuz assrock is linked to asus and they make great stuff.
