I'm a newbie here, so excuse my ignorance. I have just got F.E.A.R 1 on PC and when I start it it is so slow even the startup menus are laggy and choppy. When I do finally get onto the game it is so slow it is just series of still images rather than any animation!! My specs are these:

Windows Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit
Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.60GHz
Graphics Card: Quadro FX 4000
Total RAM: 8.0 GB

Same slowness problems were happening for Soldier of Fortune (SoF1 !! FFS)

If it is any help, videos on Youtube etc are pretty slow as well and choppy if I am running additional tabs and applications.

FEAR1:

This game has a weird bug which often needs certain USB devices to be unplugged. Try running the BENCHMARK with only your keyboard or mouse running.

I did play it, but I forget if I solved this by temporarily unplugging mouse or keyboard then putting it back in or what..

XEON/Quadro:
As said, these aren't traditional gaming components though they will work. You would have to Google what performance to expect.

If updated drivers don't fix things, I guess your hardware just isn't good enough.

As for FEAR1 it may be sluggish for BOTH the above reasons (USB issue/hardware).

FEAR1 fix:
I had to do the following which I posted from a Steam forum:

"Simply go into the Start menu and right-click "Computer", choose "Manage".

From there, go to "Device Manager" and choose "Human Interface Devices".

To get the best performance, you are going to want to disable all "HID-Compliant Device", you should not need to disable ANYTHING else."

*You should unhook everything BUT your keyboard/mouse, then REBOOT your PC, do the above fix (resets after reboot) then try the Benchmark again.

I don't know about the XEON but I suspect it's "good enough." Aside from the FEAR1 USB issue, I think your problem is a DRIVER issue.

THIS is the latest driver v331.82:

Based on the "choppy Youtube" issue as well, I'm certain it's a driver issue though possibly not only your NVidia driver. You can also try reinstalling your motherboard Main Chipset driver, but if you can't discover the problem you may need to reinstall everything.

If the "choppy" issue just started, try rolling back go an earlier RESTORE POINT (make one first so you can jump back to it).

Since yesterday I have taken onboard your suggestions and tried this:

  • Unplugged everything except mouse, keyboard and usb dongle which is needed for Steam. Rebooted but still the same.
Updated graphics driver for Nvidia 3400/4400 graphics card.
Tried to install an old game that used to work before I installed/reinstalled W7 (read on about that), C&C: Tiberian Sun, and that was just as problematic.

Just remembered though, before i used to be able to play COD MW1 without issue, then, since I was running 32bit at the time, decided to upgrade to 64bit, so removed Windows 7 completely and reinstalled the 64 bit version. I thought I had remembered all my programs got them back again, but a lot was missing when I first reloaded everything and something like a driver may well have been lost in translation. I haven't, until now, tried to play any games since upgrading to 64 bit.
This is really frustrating, really want to play this game!!
The graphics are, no exaggeration, SPF instead of FPS!!

It means something is really wrong because my system with a much crapper CPU and GPU scores higher for CPU and graphics tests

Not sure about temperatures. I downloaded Speedfan just now though .........what is it you want to know the temp of? I have fans 1-4 listed, and HD0 and HD1 if that means anything to you guys?

You should look for CPU and GPU temps.

I just looked up Intel Xeon and it looks like some models are single core.
Is yours atleast dual?

Except that a) COD4 worked fine before I changed to W7 64bit, which had the same single core processor, and b) Can I Run It? thinks it should work fine?
