.why a quad core? it's not clocked very high. get a e5200 if you can. you can overclock it like crazy. plus they have them for cheap all over ebay. price is next to nothing. there's no point throwing money away like that. the e5200 is clocked a little higher. quad doesn't necessarily mean your going to get gains from it. early benchmarks show adding cores doesn't really help. it's all a hype and a marketing scheme to get people to buy processors while they keep costs down.

I'm not sure that your Dell accepts a Q6600 processor. Which chipset does the MB have.
And the GT 440 would be such a small upgrade over the GT 520 that you may not notice the difference:

But yes, today's games are all heavily threaded and hence, can use more cores. Some modern game engines will handle as many cores as you can supply. The days of single threaded game engines are way behind us.

they should have just stuck with hyper threading. i bet you my workstation can take out the multiple core systems easily in terms of multitasking. and it's only dual single core system. it's not really behind us, it's just something they didn't want to implement properly. they should have offsetted it on graphics only which is what they are suppposed to do. it's all a market scheme and i refuse to buy anything new. like say for instance, my 1920x1200 screen on this old laptop, i mean seriously 1080p is a joke. they even said there was no gains from multiple cores in a cpu, then they go implementing that? why? ghz makes it always better. market scheme again. it was cheaper for them to stick the pentium m in the desktop due to cache production, it's all a market scheme i'm telling you... that was a stupid move from intel which is why i refuse to buy anything new. my inspiron 9200 is going to last me years.

Optiplex 745 motherboard supports Q6600 and Q6700, tested many times. I hope you have Mini Tower, so you don't have to worry about cooling that much.

Next you have to inspect your CPU heatsink, in order to have cool Q6600 you have to have copper heatsink, look below and check yours, remember copper is good, if you have aluminum you have to upgrade

Regarding video card, you can go up to HD7750 (certain restriction in size apply here) on the same power supply (if you have Mini Tower) or Zotac GTX650 low profile, if you prefer NVIDIA. GT440 is almost nothing.

Anything else I can help you with?
