I am looking at a new monitor that will serve double-duty as a work monitor and gaming monitor (using a laptop for work & gaming PC under the desk for gaming, switching the inputs at the monitor when I go from one to the other).

Right now, I have a standard ASUS 1920x1080p 23" (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236059).

I'm looking at one of these two models:

BenQ Gaming 27" 1920x1080 120Hz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014344)

or

Acer 27" 2560x1440 60Hz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009553)

Any advice on higher resolution vs. higher refresh rate in gaming and productivity is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Some additional info that may help.

I just upgraded from a HD 7850 to an R9 280X GPU. Most of my gaming right now is a very heavily modded Skyrim (I can't seem to get tired of that game with all of the options with different mods, etc).

For productivity, my laptop is a 3-year old Dell Latitude with an I7 mobile and NVS 3100m GPU. It can handle the 2560 x 1440 resolution via display port.

Budget is $500 or less.

People say higher refresh rate will give u an edge over others since you see things faster and your clicks respond faster.. bullshit...like 0.01 second is gonna make a difference. Secondly, unless you GPU crosses 60fps, anything above 60Hz is useless. (I want to see all those 120hz fanboys playing Counterstrike against real pro gamers).

With higher resolution, you get to see more. Moreover, there is no IPS panel that does 120Hz or higher. So if you want good visuals and awesome deep levels , stick to IPS (that is limited to 60Hz)

There is one area where 120hz fanboys seem to think they have an edge-- "Higher resolution=Higher System Requirement"
Higher Resolutions mean you need lots of GPU power. But then, to feel the advantage of higher refresh rate,(above 60fps) you also need a high end system. So there goes the trump card of 120hz camp.

Being able to see more than your rival in multiplayer game is in fact the biggest advantage one can have. In tournaments people are not allowed to bring their monitors since no one is allowed to play at more than 1080p resolution. See even gaming tournaments feel that having higher resolution given an "unfair advantage":D Look at Starcraft 2, Dota 2, LoL etc.. everything depends on knowing where your enemy is...and when you get to see more than your enemy, THATS AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE you can ENJOY !

Higher resolution will affect your day to day productivity. Try doing some Photoshop work or simple home video editing on Sony Vegas pro on your 2560x1440 display and FEEL LIKE GOD! Do photoshop on a 27" 1080p display and you will start noticing pixels. My Xperia Z (5"screen phone) has 1080p display, so the same resolution on a 27" screen is a NO NO for me. Frankly speaking 4K is the right resolution for 27"

Stay clear of 120Hz zealots. Its a great tech for sure but its just overhyped, like say, those $100 Razer 6000dpi gaming mice which claims to turn you into a pro. Pffttt ...S.Korea's JaeDong (world's No.1 PRO gamer) plays on 1800dpi mouse setting and 108 key basic mechanical keyboard.

And best of all
G-Sync will be arriving soon in later 2014, with external add on which will allow every monitor to offset the problems of screet tearing and delay. Google up "G-Sync" and check youtube videos. You wont even thing of buying these OUTDATED 120hz displays after seeing that.

I went with the Acer B276HUL. Productivity is amazing - everything I need on one monitor.. Gaming is fine - but that's just my style,. I'm one to go after visual quality over FPS. I'm even ok going down to mid 40's for FPS in order to run the highest quality textures with ENB. Many others understand that's not their preference - they want maximum FPS.

I just found this several years later. Please do not accuse us high-refresh rate users as people looking for an edge that isn't there, the vast majority of us just enjoy the experience a lot more. It is just so much more smooth that the extra money is worth it to us "hardcore" gamers.
