Hi! I'm looking to get a new graphics card, basically replacing my old GeForce 8500 gt. It's really really old I know, but I've actually beat many games with it (set on lowest resolution and quality of course) and I've gotten tired of that and I need something new. Playing on highest resolution isn't really a problem, I don't mind playing on 480p or so just as long as the gameplay is really smooth.
My system specs:
GA-945GCM-S2L motherboard (old, I bought it in 2009).
Pentium 4 3.4 GHz CPU.
Ram is 4 gigs DDR2 (only 3 gigs are usable).
PSU is 500W max.
I've been doing a lot of research and I'm worried that the GPU I really wanna get won't work on my motherboard. I want to get the EVGA GeForce GTX 650 so I dunno if that would work or not. I am going to definitely upgrade my motherboard and everything else when I get the money but I thought maybe I could get the GPU first. I know my system will bottleneck the GPU but anything is better than that old one really but I wanna know whether I'm gonna have problems with that or not, or whether I should opt for something else? My price range is 100-150 dollars or so. I know I wrote a lot but I'm kinda thrilled as I just got the money for it and I really need the motivation to build a better gaming PC. Thank you so much if you read this, and sorry for the message being too long.

Solution
take a look at the power supply itself. if it has one 12v rail it should be fine. if it an older power supply with more then one rail then you should replace both at the same time.

650/650ti/660/750 or AMD equal for $100-150 will be a nice improvement and shouldn't have issue with any PCIe x16 slot.

These GPU's are overkill on a P4@3.4GHz - they will be a little underpowered if you pair them up with a new i5/i7 CPU - but then again every GPU under $400 is weaker than an i5-4xxx CPU (just the way it is... in my opinion anyways).

Great, thank you. But it looks like I need to replace the PSU as well. Any recommendations?

Overkill is kinda what I'm looking for here :D , I think I'm gonna get me an i3 or something, I'm not really going to replace my monitor, so HD gaming is out of the question, might as well stick to something in my price range. Thanks :)
