Hey All,

I have a previous build from 2010 that goes as follows.

AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE @ 3.2Ghz

ASUS M4N98TD EVO AM3 NVIDIA nForce 980a SLI ATX AMD Motherboard

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

LIAN LI Lancool PC-K62 Black 0.8 mm SECC, Plastic + Mesh ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 ST1000DM005/HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

XFX XXX Edition P1-650X-CAG9 650W ATX12V 2.2 / ESP12V 2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified

GIGABYTE GTX 460 1GB

However, the nVidia GTX 460 died on me, and I replaced it with an MSI GTX 760 2GB Video Card.

I want to look at upgrading, primarily, my chipset and mobo so that it scales better with the new video card I purchased.

Approximate Purchase Date: This week.

Budget Range: About 300-400 before rebates

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, followed by media consumption (movies, etc)

Are you buying a monitor: No.

Parts to Upgrade: CPU and Motherboard

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: I prefer Newegg, but I'm open to any US online retailers. There is also a Microcenter nearby that I can go to.

Location: Houston, Texas

Parts Preferences: I would like to upgrade to an Intel Based CPU, IvyBridge or Haswell, per budget allowance.

Overclocking: Maybe, but not a primary goal. It may be something I look at when I get a better cooling system.

SLI or Crossfire: Yes, I would like to have the possibility to double up on my GPU down the line.

Your Monitor Resolution: Running at 1900 x 1200

Additional Comments: (e.g.: Need to have a window and lots of bling, I would like a quiet PC. Please also list specific software or games you're using)

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Previously, my GTX 460 1GB on my system died, so I replaced it with a GTX 760 from MSI. I'd like to upgrade my CPU and mobo to prevent any bottlenecking.

You should always look at the motherboards and check out which one will meet your needs; has the features you're looking for.

That being said, for gaming an i5-4670k is highly recommended as the i7-4770k has similar gaming performance as the i5. I recommend pairing the board with an ASUS Maximus VI Hero, but it might cut it close to your budget, or perhaps go a tad bit over.

What do you recommend more along the 300 dollar range, less so the 400.

If you want to save 30 bucks you could go for the ASUS B85-PLUS, but I can't personally recommend it as I can the Z87-A.

it wouldn't make sense to spring for the K processor and then not bother with the Z motherboard just to save a paltry $30. if you get the K, get a Z. if you can't swing that, go for the non-K processor and any motherboard (can be Z, can be H or B)

evidently, the i5-3xxx series overclocks better than the i5-4xxx series, if you were to go the K route. the motherboards might be a bit cheaper for those too (Z77 if I recall right)

Hmm, I can get the i5-3570k from Microcenter for 149.00, do you know of any solid Z77 boards?

Then you could save $60 dollars if you go with the cheaper board and the non K i5

I paired up my i5-3570K with an ASRock Z77 Extreme3 but haven't had enough time with it yet to say how great (or awful) it would be. I've generally had great luck with Gigabyte and (years ago) Asus stuff, so this is my first ASRock. Hopefully it's not an ass rock.

It should be fine but I'd go with Haswell just for the new platform. Contrary to popular belief a Haswell can overclock as well as Ivy Bridge. They do run hotter which means just get a good heatsink.
