okay me personally i woud go with these parts,
MOBO: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming LGA 1150
RAM: G.SKILL Trident 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin Model F3-2400C10D-8GTD (still 2 slots open for upgrades)
SSD: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB (room for a hdd if you want)
Heatsink: ZALMAN CNPS9500A-LED 92mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler
GPU: GTX 780 EVGA SuperClocked 03G-P4-2783-KR (and once again a slot open for a 780 down the road if you wish)
PSU: CORSAIR HX Series HX850 850W (sli ready and more wattage available once again for upgrades)
Case: i dont normally like to pick this one out seeing as how you prolly
dont have the same taste as i do but if i was to choose: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower is a very popular choice
prices:
MOBO is 149.99 with rebate
RAM is 87.99
SDD 409.99
Heatsink 41.99
PSU 149.99
780 is 500
Case is 94.99
total 1434.94 still within the average $1500 budget
well now i know the budget so scratch that haha.

The i7 is really too strong for this build if that makes sense. If you can stretch your budget a bit more it will make sense to keep the i7

How much would I have to extend it?

$800-1000 not including the OS or the processor. Maybe a little less, but much lesser and your going to have certain hardware bottle neck the rest of your system.
