Thinking of dropping a GTX 770 and new PSU into this system to tie me over until I can get a new motherboard. Is there any reason this GPU will not work?

You need native SATA 3 ports to do get the performance out of an SSD drive. If you motherboard is "older" you don't have them and SSD performance is capped... (list brand and model motherboard just in-case...)

Also, if you want to improve FPS in games SSD's won't help there at all (with or without SATA 3 ports....) System will boot faster, and levels will load a couple seconds faster.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm thinking of doing these updates now to this machine (HP H8-1228). Any compatibility issues? Any other recommendations? I'm not getting much help over at HP on this.

Add new GPU (GTX 770)
Add new SSD (Samsung 840 Pro Series MZ-7pd256bw 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal)
Add new PSU (Thermaltake Toughpower Grand TPG-850M 850W ATX 12V v2.3&SSI EPS 12V v2.92)

With any OEM case you MUST check with a measure and make sure the card will fit. More often than not there's no problem...But sometimes there is.
An 850 Watt PSU is nearly nuclear overkill for a single card system, drop back to 600 Watts with dual 6+2 pin PCI-E leads from a decent maker and you'll be fine.
TT are making some decent units now but also consider those from: Antec, Silverstone, Seasonic, Corsair, FSP, EVGA and XFX.

What is the reason my system would not benefit from a SSD? Also, thanks for the tips on the measuring tapes. I will definitely check that out before ordering.
