Allright.

Before Windows XP installation my operating systems were Windows 8 and Pear OS Linux Ubuntu based.

What happened is that I was installing Windows XP over the Pear OS Linux partition and once I did I check My Computer and apparently my Windows 8 files are now on E: Instead of C: or I beleive... Also C: became the System Reserved.

And now there is NO way to boot Windows 8.
Once I try to edit the boot.ini file and select Windows 8 it says either

•"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
C:\Windows\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

•"Cannot find \Windows\System32\hal.dll"

or

•"C:\Windows\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

Please help, I really need help because I'm starting to feel desperate, I can't simply lose my Windows 8 data!

Thanks in advance, Lucas

Not to lecture, but this is why you have a known good copy of ALL your valuable stuff before a major OS change.

Win8 on one partition, Linux on another.
Now you want to blow away the Linux partition and install WinXP there.

The XP install has completely borked the Win8 and Linux partitions.

What I would do if presented with a PC in this state is to boot from a Linux LiveCD, attempt to retrieve any critical documents out of whatever partition or drive letter Win8 lives in.
Copy that stuff to an external.

Then start completely over. Reinstall Windows 8, and/or Linux as desired. And leave XP completely in the dust. Or maybe run it in a VM if absolutely required.

Some things cannot be 'fixed' within a reasonable amount of time and effort.

That's what I would do anyway.
