Running Vista SP 2.

Yesterday I discovered a problem with my desktop background. It was black and did not allow wallpaper or any background for that matter.

I've run Norton AV and other anti-spyware programs and get a clean report. I've tried rebooting -- no change, remains black.

The rest of the desktop is OK (shortcut icons, etc.).

I tried a restore to a previous setting, but that fails, so that is a second issue.

Is there a registry key that has changed to cause the problem? Any ideas?

Check your Windows activation status - if Windows reports that it is not activated then it will set a black background and disable wallpaper, among other things.
