AMD 970 Chipsets needing a BIOS update?

I have had this build picked out for a while , and just today a compatibility issue has popped up on PCPartPicker:

"Some AMD 970 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vishera CPUs"

As this will be my first build, i don't really have much of an idea what this means.

Could somebody clarify or help out on this?

Here is my build: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/2xgQQ

Thanks in advance!

So, now I need to buy 2 CPUs?
Because I'd rather keep the FX.

Or you could buy a different motherboard that already supports that CPU.

It's basically a firmware update for your motherboard. Usually have to be installed via a bootable USB. However, from what I could find/read from reviews, the Biostar TA970 you picked does support Vishera out of box.

Does that mean I could be able to update it via USB?

Yes, but it will still need to POST for you to even get into BIOS, and for that you'd need a compatible CPU.

However, like I said, what I could find on the board seems to indicate people had no issue installing a Vishera chip without a BIOS update. If you want to be better safe than sorry though, I'd go for a 990 chip.

Okay well thank you craig, I'll be sure to put some of my own research into it to make sure I don't screw up. I'm kind of on a budget, but still, I'm sure I'll fix it.

No problem. The easiest way to go is to read some reviews on the 970 boards before you buy them. Someone is bound to mention whether theirs worked out of box or needed a BIOS update.

I am planning to have an AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core as my processor on an ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard so does that require a firmware/bios update? If so, how could you do it? Thank you very much!

On that same page I linked..

FD6300WMW6KHK (The FX-6300) is listed as supported.
