I'm troubleshooting an ethernet connection problem for a co-worker (over the phone) at a business location that is in the process of moving, which adds complications.
I have gone through many diagnostic steps that I have looked up, but have gotten nowhere. What I don't understand is as follows:
The desktop computer was moved from its prior location to a new one. When the ethernet cable is connected to it, nothing lights up on the ethernet port and the computer says there is no cable connected. However, when this same cable is connected to two different notebook computers, their ports light up and they have an internet connection.
I would THINK this indicates an issue with the ethernet port on the desktop computer. However, when a different ethernet cable is connected to the desktop, teh port flashes green and then turns orange, with no internet connection. If this cable is connected to the notebook computers, they do not have an internet connection. This would seem to indicate to me that the second ethernet cable is not connected to the internet, but since the desktop computer is recognizing it, that the ethernet port IS good on the desktop? So why do we get nothing with the cable we know is good? Any ideas based on this info?
As I say, I am doing this over the phone, so my ability to perform a lot of testing is limited. Thanks!
