Hi,

I'm not a geek and a beginner with Ubuntu... any help please give step-by-step instructions, much appreciated!!!

I dropped my laptop (toshiba satelite) and now I can only boot up with CD (ubuntu 13.04).

I want to format my hardrive so I can reinstall Ubuntu, it says I have not enough space on my laptop to do it from my CD, where I could format and reinstall... so I have to format the hardrive first to make space... Someone gave me good advice how to do that, I paste it here " From a terminal window, run sudo fdisk /dev/sda (assuming your hard drive is /dev/sda) and from its menu, delete the partitions",

The thing is that my hardrive says it can't find what I was looking for.... so now I don't know how to format ... Please if anyone can help me, so I can get my laptop workign again, I would be very happy!

Many Thanks
desperate

If you dropped your laptop its highly possible that you may have damaged the hard drive. The Hard drive is the most impact sensitive component in your PC (unless its a SSD)

I would first run some form of manufactures test to ensure the HDD is ok before spending hours reformatting.

Hi,

How do I do that?

I am using my laptop right now from a CD... can the hardrive still be destroyed? :(

The text says:

Text laptop

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.

Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press key

You will need something like a seatools live CD, this will let you boot up from the CD and run the tests on the hard drive.

That sounds awfully complicated.... :(

It didn't say that it was fried... I edited the reply to you a minute ago.. does that give a clue to what it can be?

it sounds as though either the HDD cable/connection has become dislodged or HDD its self is physically borken...

I'm sorry to say this but it sounds like the process is going to be above your level of technical ability,
I would suggest taking the laptop to a repair shop, let them know what happened and they will be able to successfully diagnose it for you.

I have solved the problem!!!

I opened it and saw that the hardrive had detached from where it should be and when I put it back its working again.

Thank you for suggesting to look inside and see if anything was lose.

:-)
