Did I receive two broken PSUs or am I doing something wrong?

On the 5th I received a new Corsair CX430 PSU. I removed my old PSU and put the wires from the new corsair into the exact same locations that the wires from my previous PSU were in. When I attempted to boot the PC up, the lights in the room dimmed for a split second, but nothing further than that, no power on, no beeping, nothing. I dismissed the PSU as broken, and requested a replacement from amazon (the place I ordered it from). After that, I put my old PSU back in, and it worked like a charm. Today, the replacement came and I repeated the process of removing my old PSU's wires, putting the new ones in the locations that the old ones were in and attempting to turn the PC on. Again, nothing happened at all except the lights dimming in the room for a split second. I'm highly inexperienced with PC hardware so I need the opinions of you all. Do you think I got two broken PSUs, or am I doing something wrong?

PS: It should be noted that I attempted to do the paper clip trick with both PSU's. I've been told that you need to hook the PSU up to a fan to have accurate results, but I do not have any fans so I performed the test by hooking the PSU up to an outlet, putting the paper clip in, and turning it on. With both of the PSU's the fan would begin moving as if to signify that it would start spinning, but then immediately stop. They both did this once per second, and each time the fan "moved" the lights in the room dimmed from a split second. What do I make of this?

Solution
i think you just got two bad power supplies.there is no way the room lights should dim as there should be virtually no load on the psu using the paperclip.

I suspected this too, but just to make sure there isn't something I'm doing wrong, can you think of anything an inexperienced hardware handler might do that would make a PSU not work?

not really, but to be sure try unplugging everything you dont need to get as far as the bios ie hard drive dvd drive.if the computer starts then, yes it could be something you did.i mean, you hooked everything up the way it was with the old psu,not to mention that when you put the old psu back in it worked. third times the charm i guess.lol
