I've got an older PC with recently upgraded parts, and after a month of smooth sailing it's suddenly started powering down during BF4 gaming.

The pc itself is a i5 750, 8gb 1600 ram, with a newly installed r9 280x DirectCUII v2 and samsung pro SSD. The PSU is a seasonic 80+ gold 650watt. Is it most likely I need a bigger PSU ? Is there a way to log or test what's causing the problem ?

What are the temps of the CPU and GPU while gaming?

I've just installed RealTemp and I'll have an answer shortly. I'm already worried as the CPU temp is at 70C without game load. GPU is fine at 30C

How old is the PSU, it's a good one but if original to your rig, could be up to 4 years old, also make sure you have the latest drivers for the 280X, those that came with it were probably already out of date

I updated drivers as soon as it occured, but looks like I've found the culprit - CPU is way too hot, once I load up BF4 it hits 99C and the logs go no higher, must be cutting out at some point around 100-110.

Although I've always managed to sort out my computer issues, I've never taken out or replaced a CPU before, is it likely it just needs a dust cleanout (I can see it's pretty heavily caked) or should I remove, re-paste and re-seat the CPU ? I'm thinking about taking it to the local computer store for once.

Looks like the GPU temp peaks at 60c, is this a worry at all ?

60 isn't a problem, on CPU, remove the heatsink, clean off the TC (thermal compound) and can generally remove the TC from the CPU while in the socket, though I remove them, can use (best) foam swab and rubbing alcohol), or a soft cloth and some rubbing alcohol

Thanks for replies, got a shiny new CoolerMaster CPU cooler for $40 installed free by the local computer shop.

The existing thermal compound was completely dry, probably lucky I didn't fry anything.

Hopefully that's problem solved.
