have a desktop with Corsair 2x2GB DDR3-666 setup and I have recently acquired a single Patriot 1gig DDR3 stick.

I am led to believe that if I add the Patriot 1gig stick to my motherboard; then all of the ram being used by the mobo will be single channel.

Which is better; continue to use 2x2GB DDR3 in a dual-channel setup, or add the 1Gig of ram for any possible additional performance.

Not only do you have to think about the single vs. dual channel but also the memory timings on the extra stick of RAM you are adding. You want the memory timings to match throughout all the memory sticks. You can manually set the memory timings in the BIOS or just check the model number on the manufacturers website to see if they match your current memory timings. I personally would stick with the 2x2GB kit you currently have unless you are in need of more memory and have a 64 bit Operating System that will take advantage of more than 4GB of RAM as 32 bit OS's will only support up to 4GB of RAM maximum.
