Asus GTX 680 or GTX 770

I'm gonna be upgrading cards and I can get a ASUS GTX 680 for $300 (ASUS GTX680-DC2-2GD5). However, the 680 is essentially the same as a 770. So, do you think a ASUS 680 for $300 is better for the long run than a 770? Or, should I wait for the new cards to be released this spring?

EDIT: Ideally, I just want a card that can play games on high settings for the next 3-4 years. Any suggestions? I'm trying to keep the cost to ~$300

770 is slightly higher clock rate and has 7000mhz ddr5 ram rather than the 680's 6000mhz ddr5 ram, at same price its no brainer get the 770 but if you can wait NVidia are saying the new cards are supposed to be 50% faster than the 780ti so I probs wait.

Well, the ASUS 680 has been tested to OC it's memory to 7200 MHz and its boost clock can run to over 1350 MHz. That considered they're preformance is very similar. If I can get it for ~$270 would that be a good deal?

sounds a good deal to me fella don't forget the 770 can beover clocked to although I don't know by how much more I suspect the ram should go higher on the 770 than 7200 as its default ram chips speed starts at 7000mhz so more than likely go higher than the rated speed, but the 680 270 sounds very tempting I must admit, I still gonna wait for the new NVidia cards soon to be released just means the cards about now will be cheaper so its a win win situ if ya look at that way, i suppose its down to how desperate you are to upgrade over waiting.

another thing to keep in mind is 680 and 770 are at there limits the gpu was made to reach, yes you can clock it higher but long term effects on something that's already reached it limits is not the best idea I feel that's probs why the 780ti was released as the gk104 core had nothing else to offer in terms of raw power ..

The 680 is being phased out, if you can get a good bargain, go for it (its' a good card...)
NOTE: if your thinking of SLI, in 6 months it's going to be near impossible to find a 2nd 680 thou....

The 770 is a bit faster, but not by a huge amount.....

Yeah... What are you thoughts about buying a used card off someone in the future who's upgrading if it's still under warranty?

What do you think would be a reasonable price for used 680? (Don't want to pay to much for a used card)

Ok, I see a lot of people asking ~$300. I was looking at this one from a local guy. (http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/sys/4270144341.html)
I'll see if he'll bite for $200. Thanks for your help!

maybe its because the ram speed is faster on the 770 than the 680 may cause issues ? or does ram speed not matter?

NVidia is odd like that, they "force" you to upgrade. I have a GTX690 (which is dual 680's on a card) BUT, I can not SLI with a 680 as the driver "locks it out"....

Same with 770 & 680.....

And yet, AMD drivers allow you to Crossfire same series and even old/new models no problem. (I CF a 7970 and an R9 280X no issues... that won't happen with NVidia... :( )

I've had 4x 3870's in quad fire back in the day and all I can say is biggest waste of money I ever spent, totally not worth the cost but I guess it was fun playing with it .. still a waste of money though lol

I got an e-mail back from the guy after I inquired about it's use and where/how it was stored. And here's what he said:
Hi,
You are communicating with a computer business owner. The card is as advertised. It has never been used by me, but was purchased "open box" from Newegg.com several months ago. This card still sells for over $370 when it is available on Newegg (open box).
Thanks for your interest,
Bruce

So, apparently it's a newegg open box item never used by the seller. Are newegg open box items usually returns? Is it safe to buy an open box card? Considering it was never used, what would you say a GTX 680 is worth?

He bought an open box ASUS GTX 680 from newegg and is then trying to sell it for $300 (supposedly purchased for $375). The card is supposed to be functional and has it's warranty.

So to answer your question, I don't think he knows but, assumes it does.

don't know about newegg policy but item has been several moths from the purchase date best guess the card under manufacture warranty now and that if manufacture allow transferable warranty

Given all of this, what would you say it's worth at the most?

in my opinion nah it doesn't worth the trouble , amazon selling new sealed GTX 770 oc for 330 $ so the extra 30 for new series and better performance is better deal here and you could also get new games on top of it
