I have an old Sapphire Radeon HD 5550 in my PC which only recently started misbehaving - mostly the PC would POST beep normally but there won't be any picture, or it would just show a black screen.

After I gave my PC a good spring clean early this January, I discovered lots of roach droppings on the board of the graphics card. So I dusted it off with my air compressor. I plugged it back in, and it booted to Windows - but with corrupted graphics. There are still some poop residues left - lots of them sticking to the capacitors. I've decided to buy a new graphics card (use it mostly for Starcraft II, Diablo III, and Steam games), but while I'm still saving up for that, can anyone recommend other solutions? Alcohol and toothbrush? A warm bath in epsom salts? I ask because perhaps the residues are the only thing causing the problem, and once I get rid of them, I might just get it working properly again..??? Any refurb companies here which might be able to revive this device?

Solution
No salt! it will cause corrosion of the traces.
Alchol and very GENTLE brushing should be ok.

Hard to say what to expect - depends on if it caused permanent damage

But get rid of them roaches!

Thanks. I will go ahead and try that - would rubbing alcohol be ok or should I use pure ethanol? If it still doesn't make much difference with the display, might have to use a magnifier and some thin, pointy object to scrape out the dirt....

Yup, I only used it occasionally. I'm back to using the integrated graphics... stuck with casual and old games for now. I think the roaches went through the front-bottom part of the chassis where there's a large gap between the front panel and the front of the chassis.

be sure to seal that gap as soon as possible as not just cockroaches but other insects and a lot of dust can enter your system
