Which parts do I need to upgrade first? Where's my bottleneck for high FPS gaming?

Hi guys,

I've bee viewing the site for a while now, and found it incredibly useful - I was looking for some advice about my system.
I'm essentially wondering which components are limiting my performance the most when playing games with high graphics at high frame rates. I've also just bought a 3D projector, so will want to be able to watch 1080p 3D movies and play 3D games from time to time.

Any help or advice you can offer will be very much appreciated!

Specs:

AMD X6 1100T 3.3GHz Black Edition
Corsair H60 CPU Cooler
2 x 4GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM (generic brand)
Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UDH3 Motherboard
Gigabyte HD 7970 3GB GPU
Corsair CX600 600W PSU
OS runs from 60GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD
Programs/games run from 512GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD

Please let me know if any more information is required!

Thanks,
Dave

As for CPU you have the max that will fit in that motherboard. If you are looking to rebuild the system I recommend an Intel CPU as they out perform AMD CPU's

As for RAM most games don't see a performance jump over 1600 Mhz speed. You should be able to keep the ram and reuse it as long as it play's nice with the new CPU.

Even swapping to a new CPU from Intel you will gain a few FPS more But the biggest jump will come from a second GPU.
you should be able to OC that CPU to around 4.0 GHz or more that will give a good bump in performance for free.

Your PSU limits you to one GPU so unless you want to buy a GPU and a PSU you will need to go with a single GPU If you want more there. Your GPU can be paired with the new AMD R9 280's which ATM are cheaper than the 7970's.

what games are you playing at the moment? this will help determine the best way to go for you.

Oh okay, I'll look into overclocking the CPU then for a start.
That might be a good idea with a new PSU and a crossfire, I'll have a look at prices etc.
So you reckon I could keep the current CPU, motherboard, memory as it is now and still get a big boost with just more GPU power?

I play quite a variety of games, but it keeping on new releases e.g. Assassins Creed IV, Battlefield IV etc. I like to play everything on high quality and have it look smooth too.

Cheers for the help!

Your CPU. Definitely, if you can check your gpu and cpu usage. You will probably see low gpu usage and high cpu usage that means the CPU is bottlnecking. I mean man the 7970 is a great card but pairing it with that cpu is bad. Get a fx-6300 and a 990fx motherboard.
