Where to install OS/games

Looking for feedback on where to install a fresh OS and my games

I just bought a new WD 1TB

to go along with an older Seagate 500GB. I wiped my 500 after saving all relevant data and was initially planning on doing a full clean reinstall of 8.1 to my 500 and all games/movies/music to my 1TB. However my buddy(who is kind of my teacher when it comes to building computers) told me that my games needed to be installed to the same drive as my OS or performance would suffer. I trust his opinion but I was curious if he was right on this

It is absolutely incorrect that they should be installed on the same drive as the OS. normally you want them installed on a second drive if you have one. there is no "performance impact" from doing this and its the normal way to set it up as you can get to your data if the OS has an issue or needs reinstalled. Most experienced users would create a second partition to do this if they had only one drive.

the exception would be if your second drive was a slow green drive but its not

Thanks for the input

I will say that, if I recall, the 500 is only a 5400rpm so I was mildly concerned about that, but it hasn't seemed to be an issue with my current set up.

Yeah it doesn't make two bits of difference. You aren't going to feel the difference in gaming between a 5400 or 7200, I should know I went from a 20MB/s IDE 120gb drive to a 7200rpm 100~MB/s drive and I felt no difference in anything to do with gaming.

Same with SSDs, minor improvement to loading time, couple seconds and thats about it.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I installed the new drive and began downloading and installing my games to the 1TB. I had a moment of panic when I took my computer apart for a good air blowing to get all the dust out. When I put it all back together, I had some RAM issues and couldn't get it to boot. But after fiddling with the RAM sticks, it's working now
