Hot swapping and hot plugging are terms used to describe the functions of replacing computer system components without shutting down the system. In all the articles it was mentioned during some system problem the drives can be replaced using hot swap.

So in case of hard disk can i use hot swap for my backup purpose. I need to backup data from my server every day. So can i use hot swap option so that after backup i can remove the hard disk used for backup. OR hot swapping the drive can be used only if urgent system problem or disk problem occurs. Is there any restriction for hot swapping the drive.

Nope, I hot swap all the time, although not daily. One thing that makes it much easier is to get THIS IcyDock so that you can just slip the drives in and out and have a direct motherboard SATA connection. The dock fits into a 5.25 bay and connects direct to the motherboard and PSU. Much safer than USB and much less hassle that opening the case.

I also recommend using HotSwap! 6.1 over the Windows drive ejection, it is free from HERE. Just turn on hot swapping on each of your SATA ports in the bios.
