Hey there! Hopefully we can get your son mining again (had the same kind of issue with my younger cousin recently)!

If you go onto the following site:

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/legacy?product=legacy2&os=Windows%208%20-%2064

And look where it says "Catalyst Software Suite" in orange. Click on this, and it should start downloading a driver package. When installing this, make sure all other windows and programs are closed, just in case!

The only problem you may have is that you are running on Windows 8.1, whereas there only seem to be drivers for Windows 8.0, so beware of this! It's worth giving these drivers a try in any case.

I had a similiar issue. AMD stopped releasing driver updates for the 4 series of cards before Windows 8.1 was released. The last official driver supported by the cards IS NOT 8.1 compatible. No matter what I did every time I installed the driver the AMD application wouldnt give me all the correct options for configuring and I couldnt enable all of my displays. In the end the only solution I found was to wipe windows and stick with windows 8 rather than going to 8.1 or upgrade my graphics card which since you're on a laptop isnt an option.

I have similar issue with Windows 8.1 and built-in ATI HD 4250 on ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO_USB3. Perhaps I will rollback to Windows 8.
I am frustrated to not be able to use all hardware capabilities with Windows 8 licensed OS (Microsoft consider Windows 8.1 as a Service Pack) => Shame on AMD!!!
