It just dawned on me earlier. Do people out there opt out on having an ISP, and find a way to get their own internet? What would it take to get your own internet?

No, there is no feasible way to do this for consumers. Even businesses purchase access to the Internet in a similar fashion to consumers. Even if you could afford to directly join the backbone, you would still need to purchase access (lease lines, etc) from some other provider (like an ISP, telecom, etc).

So, unless you are independently wealthy and nothing else to do with your money, there is no feasible way to bypass using an ISP.

Good luck!
