I have a spare wifi router (my ISP has one that they can support remotely). That will be primary, the Linksys will be secondary. I am running a CAT 5 cable from upstairs to downstairs. How would I need to configure the routers... 802.11g, dual frequency... ??

Solution

Current router - pick a port plug in
Second router - use the port 1 to 4 so everything is on the same network
Manually configure the IP to something one or two above main router, so you can access it if needed

configuration, Wi-Fi exactly the same as the upstairs router, same SSID, Password, and Even Channel if they are far enough away

Works great for my network!!

Are you adding a second Wireless router because your current wireless coverage is bad? Or are you adding it to get additional cable connectors on a different level? The reason I ask is I have a wireless router that covers my whole house great including my WD Live and my Xbox 360, not to mention all the iPhones and tablets we have.

If your eisting wireless is not very good, how big of a house is it covering? Also, maybe you are just getting interference from the nearby signlas and changing your wireless to a different channel may help.
