Gents:

Running U_12.04LTS on Xeon 1240.v2 / MSI-Z77A-gd55 / Auria.27" / 24H Crucial and two 1-T HDD.

Newly installed EVGA_NV-650x2G vidcard replacing a makedo MSI-430(which ran on native Linux driver) after earlier NV650 install failed. Evidently newer kernels updated over the last several months make a difference.

The new NV650 vidcard installed under native Linux drivers at 1200x780 or suchlike, instead of the 1440x1200 available to the Auria screen. Funny .. with the simplier vidcard I got that resolution from the Linux native. Anyrate UBUNTU-help says upon reboot I should get an automagic 'clickable' screen prompt for the NVidea binary blobs ("restricted drivers available...") and dload + install would simply happen.

The prompt should just **appear** in the taskbar and expand to a popup window... says Ubuntu.

No such clickable prompt appears to me. Checking SYNAPIC for NVidea blobs I find none listed. What to do ? Have I errored? Do I need to reboot several times ?? Please advise the most prudent route for obtaining and installing the NVidea vidcard drivers.

Mybad:

NVidia driver 304.88 installed and working well. Here's the itch: auto-installer appears only in the UNITY GUI , not GNOME. Since I never use UNITY ... anyrate in desparation I logged-in UNITY and there under TOOLS/SYSTEM-SETTINGS was the installer ... waiting ...

Interesting ... now the installer appears in all my GUIs. I guess once bitten twice shy! Have not yet run Unigine HEAVEN 4.x to see how well the EVGA.650x2 really performs. With middling settings I get < 2.0 frame/sec on my amd965/9800gtx+ legacy system.

To finish this graphics story, I get 10 frames/sec in Unigine HEAVEN. Since both the AMD965 & XEON_1240 run at 3.4 G ( & threadcount prolly means nothing) roughly speaking , the NV650x2 is five (5) times faster than the NV9800gtx+.

I'm stuck with GNOME_3 of-course which compared to my legacy GNOME_2 in U_10.04 gives an inferior usrland desktop experience. But, it's time to move along. Worth a years effort? Too slow a build? Yes, I think so.
