put together new build everything works fine but the old hdd im using had xp installed on it. When i install windows 7 everything seems to work fine but then i get a message saying "Windows could not configure one or more system components" and it reverts back to xp. i currently have no wifi card or optical drive so i havent updated any of the drivers yet, this is surely not the cause is it? any insight would be greatly appreciated.

specs:
amd fx 6350
Gigabyte 970 a ds3-p
asus hd 7790

This usually occurs (the error) when upgrading from one version of Windows to another. It is typically a feature that is not supported by the upgraded version.

When going from XP to Win 7, you are essentially performing a clean install so this should not be an issue. A corrupted install source can cause this problem to occur.

Where did you get the ISO you used to burn the image to a USB drive?

Without an optical drive, how are you installing Win 7? Thumb drive?

You can't "upgrade" XP to Win 7. You have to boot directly with Win 7 (from DVD or USB drive) and install from there.

Please describe what you done up to this point.

ive booted from usb and still get the same error message. Ive formatted my original hdd but since it is old and was originally running xp im thinking it may be formatted to fat32. Is this possible and would it give me this error?

FAT32 should not cause the problem. When you get to the part of the install where you can delete previous installations/partitions, you should remove the old stuff and make a new fresh partition for Windows (I would let the install use default settings unless you are familiar with partitioning drives).

i have done this, wiped hdd clean created 36 gb partition but still same problem, could it be caused by the fact the first os i used was xp? would it be off any benifit to clear the cmos?

The previous XP install should not be an issue. Clearing the CMOS should not matter either, but won't hurt. After you clear your BIOS, be sure to go into your BIOS and set you SATA mode to the desired AHCI (recommended if supported) or IDE mode.

ok i dont think il bother clearing the cmos then, i also havent updated the motherboard driver as im still waiting on an external optical drive, could this be the cause? Also if you or anybody else could explain in laymans terms what the " windows could not configure one or more system components" error means that would be a great help. thanks.
