Is my GPU screwed?

Hey guys.

Today I received my Sapphire Radeon HD 7870, I removed my old one and clicked it in. And saw that only one fan was moving, I unplugged it to asses whether the other was broken and it didn't appear to be, I placed it back in and then saw the same.

After 30 seconds or so I noticed that two SATAs were directly underneath the second fan causing it to stay still, the first fan however had stopped and my PC shutdown, uh-oh. I then rerouted the SATAs and removed the GPU.

I saw a wisp of smoke rise from the first fan on my GPU, but surely it can't be fried nor overheated because It wasn't even under a heavy load and surely the second fan should be fried from trying to resist the SATA. I was just wondering if I should wait a day or two before trying again or whether I've fried it and should ask for a replacement?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a bad card. With a fan not working the GPU will get to hot. Contact Sapphire support about an RMA. On the downside, you'll have to wait a couple weeks to get a card back from them. Best of luck with your RMA! :)

Yes there were two 6-PIN adapters needed which were both plugged in.

Every time I try to turn on my PC with said GPU in they jiggle the whole PC terminates it's whole start-up sequence and the wisp of smoke rises from the first fan so I suppose I'll just have to return it. Thank you!

I suppose I'm lucky then! I re-installed my old GPU and it fired up again instantly!

Cool! I'd keep an eye on it and GPU temps for a little bit to make sure things stay in good working order. Enjoy your card!
