Beats mic not working?

Hi,
I've got beats solo hd, and it has a mic attached. When I plug it into my laptop, however, the headphones work, but not the mic.
The problem isn't that it isn't attached to the mic port, because my laptop is an Acer Aspire S7 with a combo headphone/mic jack.
I know that SOMETHING happens because the internal mic also stops working when I have the headphones plugged in.
I really want to get this to work, so please help!

unless the headset is also a combo headphone/mic jack, it's not gonna work. I assume by combo you mean 2 functions in one plug.

Yeah the 2 functions in one plug is a 4 pole 3.55mm audio jack which only works on phones to answer calls when listening to music. You cant get them to work on your computer

Well, I'm not really sure.
It says "combination" on this site: www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/acer-aspire-s7-392-6411.aspx
The headset has a 4 pole 3.5 mm male end.

Well that sucks :(
What would you suggest as an alternative? I want to create vocals with as little background noise as possible (which is difficult because I live with my family), and without having to speak too loudly (my dad works in the room right next to mine)
