Most of my programs are 32 bit programs and run very well on windows XP. I was my understanding when i bought my new computer with Windows 7 home that i could set it to run either 32 bit or 64 bit programs. I have now been told that the only way that my new 64 bit Windows 7 computer will run 32 bit programs is if I upgrade it to Windows 7 Professional. Is that true or do I need to start looking for another windows XP machine? I really do not want to buy new software because the current software does everything i want ti to do, and I do not want to have to invest the time needed to learn new software. Thans for your help.
If I upgrade from windows 7 home 64 bit to windows 7 premium 64 bit, will I then be able to run 32 bit programs?

64-bit Win 7 Home premium can run most 32-bit apps. This is done automatically there is nothing for you to set, just simple install the program and run it. In some programs you may need to use compatibility mode. The only benefit Pro in terms of compatibility is that it adds xp mode which lets you run a virtual copy of XP.

(retail Windows 7 versions have both x32 & x64 DVD in the box)
For those programs which will only run under XP there is Microsoft virtual XP which gives you a free XP license
BUT this only available for Win 7 Pro or Ultimate
Microsoft also has Virtual PC 2007 and there are several other virtual PC programs you can use
You need to then provide a copy of XP to install in the virtual PC
The graphics on most virtual PC's emulates a very old grapgics card such as S3 Trio (1995?)
you wont be able to play graphics oriented games on S3 trio
If you get hold of the Microsoft program that checks for compatibility with W 7 (x64) and run it on your current system it will tell you what software and hardware driver problems to expect
