Purchased new desktop, don't really want to install current program software, then have to back-up from old machine & restore to new one. Can I move it all with a crossover?
What do you mean with a crossover cable ? I think some programs will work some not will work , but I recomend to install software from scratch like antivirus , browser , etc. Games , benchmark programs and that stuff has to work
And as crookedmouth said the most wont work due to the registry entries

Use the Easy Transfer Wizard to migrate data and program settings. You can use a crossover ethernet cable, straight cables through a switch, a rather expensive (for a one use cable) usb transfer cable, or an external hard drive. You cannot however transfer the programs themselves, they must be reinstalled on the new computer.
