After being disappointed by the reference Radeon R9 290 noise and temperature I made the move and switched to Gigabyte 780 Ti Windforce OC edition. I am very happy with the noise level, in load it is similar with the one was when Radeon was idling. But I have a question about temperatures.
The card is reviewed here

According to that website, the temperature on the Windforce should be up to 75 degrees. But I had installed the card and run the Unigine Heaven 4.0 benchmark and let it run. The benchmark displays the FPS and the temperature. My card was reaching 81 degrees. Indeed I let the benchmark run more than 15 minutes. Is this normal?

My card is installed in a Silverstone SG-09 case but the cover is now removed.

Thanks,
Codrut

He might of had better cooling in the case than you and you have to remember that other components in your computer will heat the GPU up even more. In most benchmarks etc when It's on a professional website they will have amazing cooling around the card to make it get less hot. It will be your other components heating the GPU up a little more that's all. The GPU should be fine aslong as it doesn't go above the recommend max of 95 degrees.

If you feel your temps are too hot, I suggest adding more fans to your case for better airflow.

Hope this answered your question

Those temps are on the hot side.

A video card at full power will eventually stabilize in terms of temperature and stay there.

Those 81 degrees can result from either a poor airflow in the case (which is not the case) or simply from a high ambient temperature. Or maybe your chip just isn't that good and will run a bit hotter.
My suggestion is to control the fan speeds through MSI Afterburner and forget about it. The Windforce 3x is a fantastic cooler, even at 1.5x the speed it's still pretty quite, all things considered.

A small update. I made an experiment: I took the components out of the case and put the motherboard on the side of my desk and assembled the components out in the open air. Now the temperature is 73 degrees Celsius. That's an 8 degrees drop from 81. The Silverstone SG-09 is a small case and I think the flaw is it's upper 180 mm fan which is pushing air inside thus impeding the hot air from the video card to rise up. A good solution for the CPU but not for the GPU. Tomorrow I'll install additional 3 fans in the lower part of the case, resulting in totally 3 intake fans and 1 exhaust fan. I'll keep posted when finished if I see any improvement.

Best Regards
