Is 8gb of RAM required to run far cry 3 at max settings? I have an r9 270 and a FX 6300 and its running max setting 1680x1050 no AA with V-sync at about 40 fps average, I only have 4gb of RAM, would 8 help? I know that about 1.5gb is taken up idle.
While I don't know if it's requiered I know it wouldn't hurt (might not help much either though). Crysis is a very CPU heavy game so it does use a fair bit of ram. Your gpu isn't great and may be your problem even at that resolution.

"Would 8 help", well it wouldn't hurt, but it is not going to use anymore then it currently is, unless you are maxing it. 8 is more than enough and 4 is a little low, I would change it to an 8. however most game don't go over 4GB RAM.
Far Cry 3 likely won't benefit from more RAM, but I would recommend you move up to 8GB anyway, simply because with the new console generation, the memory requirements for games will increase, and pretty soon we will have games that will eat up 4GB of RAM on their own. 4GB won't be sufficient for too much longer.
