Question about possible upgrades!

Hello everyone.

I'm looking to upgrade my factory / over the counter PC and I need some advice with a few things. First off, the specs:

Mobo: Acer FX58M
CPU: i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz
RAM: 12 GB DDR3 (It's been a while since I opened it up, so I'm not sure on the brand) 2x6
GPU: Radeon HD 4850
PSU: Liteon 500W

I've heard nightmare things about trying to upgrade OTC systems but I wasn't sure if things were as bad as friends have said. Basically, I was thinking about upgrading my video card to something mid range like the R9 270x. I'd also like to buy a more powerful and reliable PSU to handle everything.

The big question I had was about whether or not the CPU would bottleneck a video card such as the R9 270x? If so I figure I'd need to put off upgrading for a while, as I'd probably end up just building a new system from scratch as it seems that it would be the best alternative to upgrading pretty much everything else.

Am I overlooking anything? I've worked with relatives on PCs before but never set out to upgrade / build my own completely from bottom up so I'm always worried I'm missing some of the finer points. Thanks for any and all advice you wonderful people can provide.

Your CPU will be fine for a 270x and your PS is plenty for that card but you will need 2 x 6-pin power cables to fire it up.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I'm happy to hear that I should be good to go with the i7 920. Since I posted the question however I was wondering; would the money spent on a new motherboard be worth it just so I'd be able to overclock a bit?

Thanks in advance to anyone with an opinion on either of these questions.

I would not really think so for that CPU, but others may have a different opinion. If I were to get a new MB, I would get a Z87 with a new CPU and then OC them. Just getting a MB for that CPU would be a bit wasteful I feel because of the age of the CPU, you could not really us it on anything new.

I figured. I think I'll leave that until I build a new system bottom up in the future. I'll be going with the video card upgrade for now. Thanks!
