I'm stumped!

Normally I can figure out any issues I have with new builds but I cannot for the life of me figure this one out.

First I'll start with the build...

Windows 8.1
ASUS Z87-A
i5-4670k
ASUS GTX760
2x8GB G.Skill Ares
256GB Samsung 840 Pro

The internet on this PC is soooo wonky. Everything seems solid as can be except the internet.

It is also extremely sporadic. One second it works completely fine, the next second it doesn't at all.

Just gonna list a few things that are consistent to give you an idea... maybe it will point the more knowledgeable folk to the problematic source.

- Often get the google chrome "Awwe snap!" error message and have to reload the page. When I reload it tends to load instantly though.

- Internet will work flawlessly, then 5 minutes later completely zonk out and not work at all. While other PCs on the same connection work perfectly still. My older (very similar spec'd) PC also works just fine when the net on my PC is broken.

-Download/videos often zoom for the first 3 seconds then completely hang. Like a video will load 10% in 3-4 seconds then just stop loading.

- ^^ Same deal with downloads, though not 10% always of course depending on the size.

- Speed tests will give me normal ping results, in the 15-20 ms range even when net is dead. Speed tests will generally start off around 50-100 MBPs download.. but will hang in the middle of the test and slowly tick down and the test will end around 12 MBPs.. But it's just averaging out. It's really working just like my downloads, very fast at first then nothing.

- Uploads on the speed tests seem to always work fine.

- Came home tonight from work, had left PC on all night, sat down played an online video game for 20-30 minutes. Worked absolutely perfectly up to that point. When I came back 10 minutes later after making dinner the internet was toast.

-Posting from my cell phones internet right now, which has no problems at all on the PC when the internet is not otherwise working at all.

-Have the fastest/best package my ISP provides, (Rogers Canada).... Hate Rogers though....

Using a Cisco DPC3825 router.

ANNY ideas... I'm to the point I might just take it in. But I know the problem is probably so simple.

EDIT: Here is a tracert from www.google.com while internet is derping out... Dunno if this helps.

I am trying to find a starting point. First, are you on a cable or wireless? Is Chrome your default browser or do you use multiple browsers? Do you find that when you browse the web that other webpages load that you didn't want to go to? If so, then your Chrome has been hijacked. You will need to reset your browser. I assume you think the computer is the problem because your browser doesn't respond.

I am trying to find a starting point. First, are you on a cable or wireless? - Wired

Is Chrome your default browser or do you use multiple browsers? -Just use chrome but do have FireFox and it suffers the same problems.

Do you find that when you browse the web that other webpages load that you didn't want to go to? - Nope... no popups no anything

It isn't just the browser that is the issue though... 1-2000MS ping in games, speedtests that don't even finish etc.

BTW - did the first 3 suggestions before this post, no luck.

Hmmm, if none of those helped, add a LAN card (wired or wireless) and test that connection. If it is better, you may have a bad NIC on your mobo.
Do you see any unexplained heavy LAN traffic?
Have you done thorough anti-virus and anti-malware scanning?

Yea I tried to swing by the PC store tonight to pick up an Intel Network card to see if it was the mobo NIC but it was unfortunately closed.. Was more or less hoping there might be a simple obvious solution I was missing before I get there tomorrow and pick one up.

I should mention I've taken this PC to work and used it there and have the exact same issue. So I kind of knew the first suggestions wouldn't work, but gave it a shot anyway.

When I try to diagnose my connection it says...

Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding.

Just throwing out all the info I can.

Edit: also.. this is the worst its ever been. normally I can at least sort of browse and do things on chrome, tonight its almost entirely unusable.. seems to be getting consistently worse.

Just gave that one a try, found it googling, no luck.

Just did have a BSOD trying to play Diablo 3 though (first BSOD), so now I'm wondering if it is somehow hardware related, bad ram or something....

The problem has gotten consistently worse. The first 1-2 nights I played everything just fine, everything was great.. then it started to kick in. Minor lag online at first. Then bad, then tonight it's just terrible.

But still, like I said, worked flawlessly for a half hour or so when I got home and first sat down at the PC. The problem being intermittent has been consistent. The severity when it's bad is just increasing.

I had similar issues with my internet with Rogers (they blow), however it was my entire household experiencing the issue. Now that I've moved it is much better. Good luck with your issue!

Think I'm throwin' in the towel on this one, just gonna take it in tomorrow. Will be the first time I've taken my PC in to be repaired in well over a decade :( Just really am stumped and am too frustrated to bother. Thanks for all your help though!

Getting consistent BSOD now... lol... got one earlier.. then went a while without one. Then another while playing Diablo 3 again. Then another shortly after reboot before I even got into anything. So I threw in my HDD from my other PC with windows 7 on it, and got a BSOD on it as well.

So at least I know it has nothing to do with Windows 8.1 or my SSD.

Gotta be the motherboard.

So I did take my PC in. They did to it what sounded to me as absolutely nothing useful and were of no help. Updated drivers, basically ignored everything I said and treated me as a completely new PC user. But I guess they kind of have to do this....

So they call today and say to come pick it up. Say they had no problems etc. and made sure all drivers were up to date etc.

Get home, turn it on. Works like a GEM all night long, until 1:30 AM, hits a brick wall. Can't game, can't load vids, can't listen to music. Speed tests hang. Nothing works. Immediately hook up my other PC sitting right beside it. Same router same port same ethernet cable. Works just fine.

They said they tested all hardware extensively and everything is rock solid. My mind is just blown at what this could be. I want to think maybe it's a compatibility issue with my router or something, but why would it be so sporadic...

Just completely confused and no idea what to do at this point.

So I don't even think it is related to my PC, I think either my ISP or Router/Modem has gone full potato at a convenient time like a day after my new build, leading me to believe my new build was the issue. I THOUGHT I had run my other PC at home and it worked fine. But last night I brought my work PC home.

My new PC worked perfectly all night until 1:30AM. Then it hit a wall. I though at first when I hooked up the new PC all was fine but I quickly found out I was wrong.

I called my ISP and they suggested I swap out the modem after running some tests.

I noticed though when I run network disgnosis on either PC I get a "the device or resource DNS server is not responding." even at times when the internet is working perfectly, perfect speed tests, perfect downloads/video games performance etc.

I brought my PCs both to work and I get the exact same error when diagnosing, leading me to believe its not a problem with the modem, but the ISP as a whole? When I do traceroutes it routinely times out on the first line or two. Which would point the figure at the ISP, or so I was told.

Anyone have any advice as to what could be causing this DNS error? And why it would be happening on BOTH PCs, on two separate connections?

I'm sooooo confused. This problem just is not making a single bit of sense to me.
