trying to start macbook in recovery mode but starts normally

I am trying to start my macbook in recovery mode so I can retrieve from my time machine but everytime I try to start it in recovery mode by pressing command r it starts in normal mode.

Try holding down the option key as it boots.

Are you using a wireless keyboard? It may be too late to tap the keys after the keyboard has started up.

You don't say how old your MacBook is or which version of OS X it is running. Are you sure it supports Recovery Mode?
