Can you put low-end and high-end graphic cards in one build?

I have a old Gtx 550 and I also have a gtx 780. I was wondering if I could put both into one build? And if so, would it need to be connected to each other?

you can put them together, but can't use them together for SLI. You can dedicate the 550 as a phyx card but theres really no point in having the 550 in the system
