Hi Guys,

My first post here and would firstly like to thank TomShardWare for this incredible forum as well as the people who have given feedback. It has been so helpful for me especially its my first time dealing with hardware and trying to build my own desktop. I hope this is the right place to ask for this. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong section.

Kindy refer to the below for my computer specifications. Any advise on the parts and whether are they compatible with each other? If the specific part is marked with a "?", this means I have yet to choose anything for this. Kindly advise as well. Here goes!

Approximate Purchase Date: February-March

Budget: I am from Malaysia, therefore I have no idea of the rate conversion as overseas seems to be cheaper. But no shipping charges will be incurred as I will be purchasing them myself at the plaza (The most famous location for IT stuff with cheap prices in Malaysia). But in ringgit, preferably below RM 4,200 excluding the monitor.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming (e.g: Dota 2, Mass Effects), surfing the internet, normal business/work usage, normal programming (not that important, i have a laptop for that), movies.

Parts to Upgrade: Everything is new.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Only have the price list from the plaza. Not purchasing online.

Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Parts Preferences: Intel(CPU) and Nvidia(GPU)

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: I am getting one, but unsure which one to get but the resolution I hope to get is 1920x1080. Please advise.

Additional Comments: Well, preferably a quiet pc, but not till the extent that it doesn't make a single sound at all.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: I want a better decent gaming rig desktop which I had NEVER had.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670 @(RM684.00)
Motherboard: Asrock Z87 Killer Motherboard @(RM549.00)
Memory: Gskill Trident X 2400MHz 8GB @(RM339.00)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk @(RM329.00)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive @(RM185.00)
GPU: Asus GTX 760 2GB DDR5 Direct CU II @(RM1199.00)
Case: ? Please recommend.
Case Fan/CPU Cooler: ? Please recommend.
Power Supply: Seasonic S12 Bronze 620W @(RM299.00)
Optical Drive:? Please recommend. (Below RM55.00)

The price should be able to go a little lower as bargaining is applicable.
Thanks!

Solution
If thinking the NZXT white case might drop it to the HAF 912 ($40 difference in the States) and kick the CPU up to the K model, top it with the Hyper 212 EVO as the CPU cooler, otherwise looks good
its hard to give a good recommendation if I can't tell local pricing

The parts are quite compatible with each other though I think you can opt for a cheaper motherboard. If you're not overclcoking (using a non-k 4670) there really is no need for an z87 motherboard.

For a case, look for one from Corsair/Antec/Silverstone/Fractual/Bitfenix/Cooler Master. Which ones are available for you?

If you're planning an OC, look for something like a Cooler Master 212+/212Evo or Zalman CNSP10X (or 11x etc). For non-OC the stock cooler from the box may suffice

For PSU, an 500W one with an 80+ Bronze rating like Seasonic/Corsair/Antec/XFX/EVGA and a few others are good choices

For optical drive, anyone that suits your needs would be fine

For GPU compare the 760/660ti/7950 Boost and see how much they cost. Generally, I would say 760 > 7950 Boost > 660ti. It really depends on how they are priced.

Hi stickmansam,

Thank you for your promptly response.

Well, I think the pricing should be fine considering that its from the lowest pricing place with quality goods I can find.
Its more on what I should get actually.

For the motherboard, I was aiming to have a better one just in case if I am planning to upgrade the components in the near future. Does the MotherBoard determine things as such as how many USB ports you have? Or is that dependent on the casing?

For casing, all these brands are available, but I was looking at the NZXT white model. I just don't know how big of a casing should I get and how does it matters. I don't really get the explanations from google, so I am hoping I can get some feedback in layman terms. Will a smaller casing also effect my ability to add extra HDDs in the near future?

Currently not planning to OC, not really sure how to yet, but its interesting. But definitely won't be OCing in the near future. Hence why the cheaper processor in order to save some bucks for the GPU. Definitely going for the 760 already for the GPU. The 770 is much more pricier. Can't afford that.

Optical Drive wise, I think I will be either going with Asus E Green or Liteon, it's fair right?

The lowest PSU watts I can get from the retailers there are 620 Watts lol. But just in case for any modications in the future, the PSU would be good enough. Is my thinking correct?

For pricing wise, I think you can divide the price by a round figure of 3 since the conversion rate from USD to MYR is more or less 1:3.

Case changes the stuff available at the front. Motherboard changes stuff at the back and also some stuff at the front (but case has to support those)

Yes a smaller case can limit the number of internal hard drives. NZXT is a good brand

Going to a 4570 wouldn't be much of a loss if its cheaper by a good bit

Usually getting nice features is only available with the z87 chipset but there are a few B85/H87 boards that are quite nice

Optical sounds good

620W is good if you want saw a 780 in the future

Thanks for your reply Tradesman1.

I see where you're going with the K-Model, but if I upgrade to the K-model, will Asrock Z87 Killer be okay? I have a friend who's with the K-Model but going for Asus Z87-A MoBo. It's just different vendors, right?

For the casing, NZXT Phantom 410 (Mid Tower) is about RM 396.

For the HAF, here are the results of review from 3 retailers.

Retail #1

CM HAF XB ATX RM299
CM HAF XM MID-ATX RM469
CM HAF X F-ATX RM559

Don't see anything with the 912 here. And Just to be clear, I am supposed to go with MID-ATX right? It's the most common and would fit my MoBo right?

Retail #2

HAF 912 / ( W ) RM 299

Retail #3

CM HAF 912 Advanced RM289

So in comparison, I would be able to save about RM 70 - RM 80. The cheapest I can get for the K version is RM 719. So the price does make up.

For the cooler part, I think I'll go with yours. I'll be trusting you on this. But a question, I thought casings already come with fans. If I do take buy the cooler the suggested, do I need to remove the original fans and put this in? And what part would the cooler work best -> rear, side or top?

Update
Checked with a retailer, refer to the below.

Retail #1

COOLER MASTER
HYPER 101 CPU FAN 55
HYPER TX3 EVO CPU FAN 89
HYPER 212X CPU FAN 145
GEMIN II S524 CPU COOLER 149
HYPER 412 SLIM CPU FAN 169
HYPER 612S CPU COOLER 189
COOLER MASTER X6 209
TPC 612 CPU COOLER 229
TPC 812 CPU COOLER 269
V4 GTS CPU COOLER 249
SEIDON 120M 279
SEIDON 120XL 339
SEIDON 240M 379
EISBERG 240L 599

Hmm, don't see any Hyper 212 Evo Cooler here. I can continue finding though but if in any case, are there any good CM case fans listed above?

On another note, if I am getting my internet through wireless, do I have to separately get a wireless component to be installed on my desktop be able to receive the WiFi signal?
