Need help with 3 monitor setup

Hey Folks,

I am sending out an SOS to you guys as I am desperate to find a solution to my problem. For Christmas I bought myself a Cintiq 13HD for drawing and design and am trying to figure out how to have it running at the same time as my original 2 monitors.

I currently have the following:

Monitor 1: Samsung SyncMaster T240 (DVI connection)
Monitor 2: Samsung SyncMaster 2232GW (DVI connection)
Monitor 3: Wacom Cintiq 13HD (HDMI connection)
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series (2xDVI, 1xHDMI and 1xDisplayPort)
Windows 7

I have been trying for days now to find a way to get the 3 displays to all work simultaneously but have failed.

I have seen a number of posts saying that I needed an active DisplayPort to DVI connection to connect one of the monitors, so i bought one and set up as follows:

Monitor 1: Samsung SyncMaster T240 ----> DVI Port
Monitor 2: Samsung SyncMaster 2232GW -----> Active DisplayPort to DVI
Monitor 3: Wacom Cintiq 13HD ----> HDMI

and I have tried other configurations.

No matter what I do, my computer detects there are 3 monitors present but will only display on 2 at any time.

My old computer is sitting in the other room with an older Nvidia graphics card thats doing nothing. Could I use that? Im totally lost.

the R9 290x now doesnt need an active DP-active-DVI you just simply use 2 DVI and 1 HDMI, its made for dual monitoring and its a good card. whatch linus thech tips youtube channel for it

what operating system are you using? oh sorry i see windows 7, some gfx cards that can display multi monitors don't always have the multimonitor enabled find out what brand your card is and look on the websites FAQ section for multi monitor setup.

for example your brand maybe gigabyte so look on giggabyte's gfx website find the version of your card and look for FAQ on that card.

Connecting multiple monitors for AMD Eyefinity technology couldn’t be simpler. There are four easy rules to remember:
1.The first two monitors can connect to the graphics card with any display output on your product: HDMI, VGA, DVI or DisplayPort.


2.The third (or greater) display must be connected to the graphics card via DisplayPort.


3.If your monitor does not have a DisplayPort connection, you will need an inexpensive active DisplayPort adapter for it. DVI to DP adapters can be had for less than $30 USD.2

What brand displayport adapter are you using. This is most likely the issue. AMD cards can be picky about which display adapters they work with, especially the older cards. Which brand display adapter are you using. I would recommend trying one of the brands that is from a card manufacturer and has the AMD logo on the box. Avoid the other brands like startech and accell as they seem to be problemantic.

I bought a sapphire active adapter as recommended by Radeon on their Eyefinity site and it hasnt made any difference :S

I have 1 monitor to the HDMI port, 1 monitor to the DVI port and 1 monitor connected by a Sapphire Active DVI to DisplayPort adapter.

I have looked at Eyefinity but my understanding is that I am only able to make 1 large desktop i.e. one monitor that spans 2 or 3 or more monitors, which is not what I am after. Am I mistaken?

I really want 3 separate monitors so I can maximise windows on each screen and not have to use windowed mode on games etc.

Any ideas?

Check in catalyst control centre under desktop management that they are all enabled there? i had this problem as well and it turned out the adapter i was using wasn't actually an active one even though it said it was so that may be the issue

I will check when i get home from work but I sincerely hope that it is working as the box says its an Active DVI to DisplayPort adapter and it cost me over $100 including shipping :/

So you think that if I have a working 'active' adapter, I should be able to display on all 3 monitors with my current set-up?

Would feel bad sending ths adapter back saying its faulty when it is just me not knowing what I am doing. Is there anyway I would be able to check that it is working?

Easy solution:

Ditch the Radeon, buy an nVidia card instead. They don't do the stupid DisplayPort bullshit. The Asus GT640 2GB will let you run 4 monitors using 2 DVI, HDMI, and VGA. It'll cost you around $100.

I f'n HATE DisplayPort.....

An even cheaper solution:

But a simple Radeon card for the Wacom, and run dual cards (keep the 69xx for the Samsung screens)


Simpler still - does your CPU have onboard graphics / mobo has an HDMI port? Sometimes you can keep onboard stuff enabled even with a graphics card installed.

Alright I give up trying to get my existing set up to work. I am going to buy a new Graphics card this weekend. Can anyone advise me as to what to buy?

Looking for a card that I can simply plug my 3 screens into and for them to work. No SLI, no Crossfire, no Eyefinity. Just plug and play.

Need a card that I can have 2 DVI monitors and 1 Wacom Cintiq with an HDMI connection.

I do a lot of gaming and 3D modeling and am willing to pay for a good one.

What cards would people suggest?

Before you buy another card have you tried another displayport adapter yet. Everything is pointing to your adapter being the issue. I run 4x monitors from my AMD 7950 with no trouble. Before this I was using a 5850 and running 3 monitors. AMD cards have always been picky about which display adapters they work with. While the Sapphire you have is one of the ones that most people have success with, it could just be that you got a bad one. No matter what, with your video card to get up to 3 monitors, one of them has to be displayport since one of the DVI ports shares internals with the HDMI port. If you can I would definitely try another displayport adapter before replacing your card.
