Hi all,

The GTX 480 is the first 'proper' GPU I've ever had and was recently given to me as a hand-me-down. I know it's a notoriously hot card but I'm been obsessing over monitoring temps.

When I first turn the PC on the card tends to rise up to around 60 degrees then drops and idles are around 40.

I can play Skyrim on max settings and it seems to hover around the 70-80 mark, occassionaly rising to 90ish.

As the card's official top temperature is 105 can I safely turn off the monitors now and stop panicking? :)

Thanks

I think its alright, I have a gt 440 in my secondary computer and it sits at 95 to 96, 90% of the time. Even when idling it will still sit at 80 degrees. I have never experienced any throttling and it seems to be perfectly happy at those temps.

I know its a different card, but I do believe it should be alright.

It's safe, and the 480 did run hot, even when new, plenty of reviews using the stock single fan cooler got to 90+C.
If it has a non stock cooler it's probably picked up some dust in the fans and heatsink fins, try removing and blowing it out. Most computer stores these days sell cans of cleaning gas for this purpose.
Do it outside if possible. Wear eye protection. Blow the 'wrong way' that is to say against the normal airflow. Hold the fan gently to prevent it spinning out of control and use a moist cotton bud to gently remove any crud from its blades.
