Hey Guys,

I am looking to upgrade my rig to one of the new Intel Extreme processors. I was looking at either the 3960X or the 22nm 4960X. I do a lot of 3D development, video editing, game development, etc. as well as some gaming here and there so I am really interested in speed and longevity over cost. I have a 980X and i love it.

I have not seen a lot of LGA 2011 boards on vendor websites like new egg or amazon. I have seen a few different models on manufacturer websites like MSI.com so i am a bit confused as to whats new and good and what is not. Again i am looking for mostly speed and longevity and not so much at cost.

I have had MSI boards for years and really like them, and since I am not a bit OC guy having something like the OC Genie is a really big feature for me.

So I thought i would ask you guys what your thoughts are on the new LGA 2011 CPUs, which you would go with (either the 3960X or 4960X) and what a good motherboard would be to pare with this.

Also, on a side note i heard something that the LGA 2011 has a more direct connection between the PCIE socket and the CPU? is this right?

Any help is greatly appreciated guys, thanks!

I would go for the i7 4960x as it is very much in better performance than 3960x and is available at a same price.(newegg, @1049$)
For motherboard you can consider MSI X79A-GD45 Plus LGA 2011 Intel X79 ATX Intel Motherboard @ $249 (newegg). Fantastic board from MSI. All the best!!!

Hey Thanks for the quick reply!

To be honest those were the 2 I was really looking at so im glad to hear that it isn't a terrible decision. only downside is that newegg is out of stock on the MSI boards :fou:

^ First world problems i suppose

Thanks again!

CPU - Intel Core i7-4930K
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116939

Its just a Core i7-4960X, minus 3 MB of shared L3 cache, with base clock rate down by 200 MHz to 3.4 GHz, and the peak Turbo Boost frequency 100 MHz to 3.9 GHz. But the price difference - ~$400
Also not to mention the multiplier ratio which can be tuned.

So with the money saved, a bigger SSD, lots of RAM say 32GB, a very good CPU cooler...

Mobo option - ASUS X79 Sabertooth
