there can be many reasons for a crash like the one you got but here is a cause that often gets overlooked.
if you graphics card can use a HDMI or displayport connection then it will have sound support included in a driver. This driver
can have conflicts with other sound devices. To isolate this as a cause, go to control panel, device manager, find the list
of high definition audio drivers and disable all of them except the one you want to use.
I use the one on my motherboard and disable the one in the graphics card because and the other 4 because the motherboard one is the has the least amount of delay while i play a game. Some of the others have 1/2 second sound delay.
anyway, disable do not remove the extra sound sources or windows will just put them back via plug and play
