Hi everyone, I'm in a dead end to choice a good upgrade. I have a Sapphire 7950 3gb OC edition with a Phenom x4 955. Yes, I know, it's a huge bottleneck, right?

Researching about the possible upgrade in my budget, I found two possible combos:

1) i5 4670k + ASRock Z87 Extreme4

2) FX 8350 + ASUS M5A99X PRO R2.0

Both of these will be almost the same price (at least here in Brazil). My question is, what choice you guys think it's better? Or do you have another good combination to provide?

My goal is manly a gaming PC. I think that I will overclock the processor too.

Thanks all!

Solution
1, Is it a huge bottleneck? Or need you upgrade it?
It's hard to say what kind of combination of a CPU and a graphic card matches a perfect gaming PC. It depends ALL ON WHAT GAME YOU ARE PLAYING. Some games require a better CPU, while others may require a good GPU. YOU NEED TO SEARCH FOR EVALUATIONS OF YOUR GAME. One of my friend is using a Core Quad and a GTX670, and his game runs pretty well.
2. Generally speaking
A 4-core CPU is impossible, and if most of your game are online games, a higher frequency is also important (however there is no comparability between Intel CPU and AMD CPU in frequency). AMD and Intel's CPUs may perform very different among some games.
For the motherboard, I suggest you not to focus only on price, but to...
If you're overclocking, I would go with the 8350, or an 8320 if you can get one. Prices are much higher in Brazil IIRC, so the higher number of cores should make it more future-proof, with more games starting to to use more than 4 cores.

Except that there is more behind then just "5.0 > 4.0". Its not that simple. The Intel gains more speed from overclocking than AMD FX does along with its advantage at stock (i5 @ 3.4, FX @ 4.0)

This is why a FX 9590 @ 5GHz struggles to match the I7 4770k again at stock (3.5)

the power consumption, memory and SSD performances in AMD and Intel's platforms, etc.
I hope this answer will help you :)

Solution
As lyrr says, it really depends on what you're playing. Generally, the i5 would perform better in a single threaded game compared to the 8350 which would perform better in multi thread operations.

I personally like my 8350. The motherboard will support a pretty nice overclock I believe.

Thank you for the answers. Well, I know that the 8350 do better in multi threaded (at least in most cases), but I couldn't be so much convinced that in overall the 8350 is better than 4670k.

Other question, there is a difference using the 7950 on Intel or AMD? It's true that idea of better performance using ATI+AMD and NVIDIA+Intel?

I have an Asus m4a785td-v evo. I tried to overclock and the best that I got is @3.8 GHz. More than 3.8 GHz the temperatures goes up to 60º and the processor shuts down to prevent damage. I have a Hyper 212 Plus air cooler with a 690 CM II Advanced chassis.

Even with @3.8 I think that I have bottleneck, I am monitoring the usage of CPU and GPU during gameplay and a lot of times the CPU goes to 100% and my fps have a considerable drop.

Unfortunately I don't have any to share at the moment, but I will try to capture and provide later. I'm thinking that I have bottleneck first because my processor, even being a good processor (specially when OC), it's an old processor. Second thing is what I told before, many times I saw the cpu hitting 100% (when this happens, most of the times I have a fps drop) and the GPU never pass 80%, I don't remember the exactly percentage of the GPU usage.

Maybe I'm wrong and this isn't a bottleneck, if so, I'm sorry to told that I'm facing one. Despite this bottleneck thing, I really wish to change my computer configuration, I think it's time. And I think that I will improve my overall performance with one of those cpus.

I really like AMD, but I don't know yet what to choose.

Another thing that I have a question, when I change my motherboard and cpu, I will have to format my hard disk, right? Even if I choose to go with the 8350, there is no way to change the mobo and cpu without formatting?
