The volume on my laptop doesn't work

I have tried just about everything you can try and i came up with nothing. I have checked everything in the volume icon and came up with nothing but the stereo and mono doesn't work in the volume testing. How do i get either one of them to work?

please help me.... and could you give me step by step instructions

yes, it worked before i used it the other day and it worked like normal. but then my son dropped it and it stopped working. Later that day my brother did something to the computer, I'm not sure what he did but it started working and a few days has passed and now it isn't working again. My brother is out of town right now and i cant get in touch with him to find out what he did.
