I have a Dell Inspiron 1440. Just recently my keyboard has started typing the wrong letters such as:
7 = y67
u = 67
& if i hold down the keys "y" or "u", it types "7".
It all started when my laptop died (meaning it didn't shut down properly) & when I cut it back on, I noticed it on the welcome screen when I had to enter my password. Sometimes, it types by itself. the second & third row of keys won't work except for 7, u & y. I truly need help. I've tried almost everything. I DO NOT have a NumLock key & it is not set on sticky keys or toggle keys. I tried changing the Regional & Language setting & that didn't work. Help me pleaseeee.

Hi

You need to find out if the keyboard is broken or Windows is corrupted

If you can boot from a bootable CD or DVD or USB then test the keyboard

examples
A Windows 7 DVD
A Linux live CD
many free linux iso files available including some from Anti Virus vendors such as Kaspersky
[some AV CD's are bootable]
use ImgBurn to put ISO on CD
A Windows PE (Windows Pre installation Environment V1 = XP, V2 = Vista, V3 = Win 7, V4 = Win 8)
Universal Boot CD

Have you spilt a drink on the keyboard or had a cat pee on it (you would probably smell that)

i had this problem after cleaning my keyboard with a paper towel while it was on. Apparently, pressing "fn + num lock" will fix this. If you dont have a num lock key you will need to press "fn + caps lock" instead ;)

Heya, I know this is a completely old question now, but I'm gonna reply to it anyway, for people who happen to be experiencing the same issues.

This usually happens when a little bit of moisture gets into your keyboard. The water conducts the electricity and ends up becoming its own circuit that spreads over the circuits on under the other keys, so when you press one key the computer will register it as multiple or different keys. (I'm not sure if I've explained it too well, but hopefully you'll get the point.)

The solution? Just as you would put your phone in a bag of rice if you got water behind the screen, put your laptop/keyboard in a bag of rice and leave it there for 2 to 3 days. Put a mug of rice in a shopping/carrier bag and then put the laptop on top of the pile of rice, in the bag. Keep it horizontal and try not to move it about too much, otherwise you might end up with rice getting inside your laptop/keyboard.

This worked for me recently, so I thought I should share it, since I could find this answer anywhere during my search for one.

Hope this helps! :)

Your Keys Must Be stuck If You have a External Keyboard Hit It Hard On It's back It Worked for me but In laptop You Need To Replace the keys or Fix It By Yourself. I Too Had this Problem And It Was Too much Annoying
