Can't decide on gaming monitor

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new monitor for use with my gaming PC and PS3. I'll be using HDMI. At the moment, I'm using an LCD Sharp Aquos TV from 3 years back. I think it's 20" or so.

My budget is £200 - £275, and I want an LED LCD monitor. I'll note my GPU is an Asus GeForce GTX 770.

I've narrowed my choice down to 2 monitors but I have a few questions.

1. Asus VG248QE £269.99

  • 24"
    TN
    1ms Response Time
    144hz
It's 3D in case I ever want that option
    Has 2 HDMI ports
    Available: Jan 2013

2. Asus VE278Q £229.95

  • 27"
    IPS ( I think)
    2ms response time
    Not 3D
    1 HDMI Port
    Available: Nov 2010

My main concerns are:

  • 24" vs 27" - is 27" too big for gaming? Will the picture quality not be as good?
The VE278Q was around in 2010 - is it too dated quality wise?
I've heard that TN LED's aren't as good as IPS - how true is that?

I'm leaning towards the VG248QE, any comments would be appreciated. I'm a noob when it comes to displays. Thanks in advance.

    EDIT:
    My Specs are:
    i5 3570k
    GTX 770
    P8Z77-v
    8GB Corsair RAM
    750w Gold Corsair PSU

And I already have speakers, so sound isn't really a concern. :)

I've see three posts in the last two days about dead on arrival or misbehaving VG248QE monitors. Your experience may vary.

I actually have that 27 inch monitor it is also a TN panel with LED backlight. The description is wrong, I think, the internal speakers are 1 or 2 Watt I believe (they are terrible if you intend to use them, but handy for Systems on a Stick.)

2 3watt speakers according to the more detailed description on Newegg.

I like it, was $330 at time of purchase, it is also not the newest version of that particular monitor. I don't notice any ghosting or other problems. Has every single common input, which is what made me get it over Samsung's Display Port and VGA only.

VE278H is the latest model in that price range. They have 'nicer' ones of course.
