i5-4670k vs i7 4770k + 8GB vs 16GB

What combo would be the best to go with. Originally I wanted i7+16GB but I want to bring the cost down.

Desktop will be used for gaming, browsing(multiple tabs), music, dual monitor + VM's(no more than 1 or 2 at a time).

I don't think the i7 is needed but I've heard it will b needed for future games.

Help please :)

Depending on what he will be using his VM's for.
It might not need more than 1GB ram each, might need more, all depends on usage.

I have been running 4 VM's on 8 GB without an issue, they were running debian (which will run smoother with less amount of RAM).

Also the extra cores/ressources might come in handy with his VM's if he choose to...

Well no offense but the i7 wont be "needed" for future games, :p let me just clarify this for you, games use A LOT of GPU power , now most games like FPSgames and RPG games and all that dont really need an excellent CPU, they will run on a decent CPU like an i5-4430 might be able to run BF4 on ultra, there will be some parts where it will maybe be pushed a bit further to the limit but it will handle it well, now RTS games and MMO games need a better CPU but they still dont need an i7 4770k, now if u get an i5 4670k and if u have like a GTX 770 or an R9 280x with gaming u will feel the need to get SLI/Crossfire before feeling the need to get a better CPU
As for the ram, normally 8gb is enought for overall gaming, 16gb is usefull for Video editing, 3d rendering and stuff like sony vegas

The i5 will be fine for your use. 16GB of RAM can come in handy when running virtual machines. My current system has an overclocked older i7 (2600K) and 16GB of RAM. I run windows 8.1 as the main OS and have Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed on virtual machines. I can run all three operating systems at the same time with 16GB of RAM. I wouldn't try to run two virtual machines on 8GB of RAM.

It's easier and cheaper to upgrade from 8GB to 16 GB than from a 4670k to a 4770k.

For gaming: No a 4670k should be more than enough for some years.
