I have the same problem right now, have a hdd from a dell laptop hooked up to a dell desktop trying to pull files off of the laptop hdd. Can see the laptop hdd in my computer ( F: ) and even it's partition recovery ( D: ) but can't access either of them, keep returning an I/O error. any ideas?

Download and install the Crystal Disk Info in my Signature. If a drive comes up as Caution or Bad post a screen shot of it or tell me what is bad. Sounds like hard drive failure to me. You can always trying doing a
Chkdsk f: /r or a Chkdsk d: /r and see if you can get the MFT rebuilt and gain access as well. But an I/O error is usually pretty bad.
