My computer spec is as described below:

FX8350(OC 4.3Ghz)
Sapphire R9 290
MSI 970-G43
8GB RAM
Corsair TX650
Windows 8.1

My in game settings are 1080p, all ultra settings, X2 MSAA and SSAO.

Link to the screenshot

As you can see here, my FPS drops to 40s when there isn't much fighting happening in the map. This particular server only had 30 players and my field of view had no fights.

On the other hand, my FPS will shoot up to maximum of 150s in some parts of the maps.

I noticed that my overlay.drawgraph showed that whenever I have this FPS drop, CPU usage is higher than GPU usage. I don't know the exact numbers but the CPU graph is higher than GPU graph when I'm facing the parts of the maps that cause these FPS drips.

These dips are not intermittent, FPS stays low as long as I stare at those parts of the maps. When there are fights, my fps will drop even more.

When I'm in maps that have good FPS (above 60 continuously) I noticed that CPU and GPU usage graph is right on top of each other, not one above the other.

What do you guys think the problem is?

This is really bothering me.

Thanks in advance!

p.s. GPU temperature never goes over 75C even under load and it is not overclocked.

Can you try setting your cpu and gpu to stock settings?

Sounds like your CPU oc is unstable.

I was thinking the same thing. I would also suggest using hwinfo to log data while you pay so you can get a detailed record of cpu and GPU activity.

I have just tried putting it in stock and it actually had no difference on performance in game. Still getting low FPS dips into the high 30s and 40s in intense maps.

What is your gpu usage when you play bf4?

75 Degrees is low for your gpu

If you can, try another Power supply if that doesn't work try giving back or selling the gpu and trying a gtx 780 or 780 ti.

How many fps are you expecting? Have you tried comparing what you are getting to others with a similar configuration for that game?

I was expecting it to not go below 50fps at demanding maps. I don't know what other people are getting because this is fairly new GPU.

@ 1080p that is a reasonable expectectation. I have a 780 ti @ 1440p and my frame rate rarely dips below 60.

I've never used the 290 however according to the reviews the card performs quite well. Do you have a good internet connection?

I figured out the problem.

Turns out that my RAM speed which was 1333MHz was too slow for the CPU and memory intensive game such as Battlefield 4. I safely overclocked the RAM speed to 1700MHz and this has drastically improved my FPS dips in the multiplayers.

Now my question is, would commercially available 1866MHz deliver little more performance than my overclocked 1700MHz? If so I think should upgrade to 8GBs of 1866MHz memory.

Thanks for the help.

My guess is you would get a little bit more performance however I'm not sure if you would notice the difference however the faster ram might improve system stability. I would keep the ram if the system is stable and the system performance is good.

How much of a increase did you get with the overclock?

If you buy new ram make sure that it's compatible with your motherboard by checking your motherboards Ram list.

Buying the faster ram might provide more stability.
