i7-4770K runing 100C at stock clocks; tried air and liquid coolers

Installed a new MB (Sabretooth Z87), RAM (32G Corsair) and CPU (i7-4770K). With expectations of eventually overclocking it, I bought a Corsair H80i liquid cooler.

At max load (Prime95) it ran 100C. The pump didn't seem to be working on the H80i, so I exchanged it. Same deal.

Went back to the factory Intel fan included with the CPU. Same deal. About 50C idle and 100C under Prime95.

Is it possible for a CPU to be defective in such a way that it runs extremely hot even at stock voltages and clock speeds? Otherwise, I'm at a loss. My old 2600 ran at 4GHz colder than this thing does at its 3500K stock speed.

I have redone the thermal compound a couple of times. I've tried to dab in the center as well as the business-card skim coat of Artic Silver 5. Good contact, but it hasn't helped. I've verified the fan is mounted properly and the pegs come out the back side of the board, etc.

Thanks for any tips.

Sorry I have to ask, but are you absolutely sure you have mounted the cooler correctly? What program are you using to view temps? Download HardwareMonitor. It could be a faulty motherboard thermal sensor, try updating your BIOS.

The chances of getting a faulty CPU from Intel is very very slim.

It would appear this only happens when I use the ASUS Z87 "magical automatic" overclocking mode, which I wasn't aware was on. I'm surprised that takes it right to 100C, but there you go.

With the stock Intel fan and completely stock ASUS timings, it's in the mid-60s under Prim95.

On my THIRD cooler it worked; runs in the mid-40s at stock clocks, about 60C if I push it to 4.2GHz. So when they work, they work. Odd that I got two bad ones when I bought one local and one from Newegg, you'd think they'd be different batches, etc. But there you go.
