Please help! My Gateway laptop will not start Windows 8. It says a repair device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error code 0xc0000185 and file PSHED.dll. It says that i need installation media but i do not have any i am semi-intelligent and can follow simple instructions but i am somewhat computer illiterate compared to most of y'all! Please tell me, is there any way to fix this prob without the disk. Remember please give me simple detailed layman instructions that i can follow......thanks

PSHED.dll = Platform Specific Hardware Error Driver

basically, you have a custom piece of hardware that is reporting hardware problem and the system is reporting it to you via bluescreen.
I would boot up into the BIOS and see if there is any sort of hardware monitor you can check the status of the machine.
The error can be fans that don't spin because of dust, overheating of the cpu (because the fans stopped) battery has a logic circuit that can throw errors. (remove the battery if you can and power up on AC power)

there are also user mode programs (Some alternate 3rd party defrag drivers and cache managers) that can cause this error. again these are custom drivers and most people would not have them or the error you have...

I want to say thanks to all of you who responded with some help for me....the computer i am attempting to fix is for my 16 year old son with Asperger's....just trying to undo something he did but apparently not one person in the world of the internet can help...should have stuck with the Indian woman in India on behalf of Gateway even though she was hard to understand at least she was willing to respond....unlike all of you "experts" lol thanks for nothing

i am sorry that the forum wasn't able to help, but I will have to remind you that none of us is getting paid in order to provide help unlike that "Indian Woman", or claims that he/she is the absolute authority in any hardware/software section...

NOTE: I DON'T by any means represent officially tomshardware.com

Isn't that the point of this website or so i thought was to ask a simple question and get a simple answer even if you don't have an answer and not have to pay for it cuz that is what i was attempting to do before i went ahead and just paid cuz gateway said that's what i had to do...i do not understand how not one person was willing to respond to my tech question in weeks but it took someone less than 5 min to be confrontational...all i have to say is wow!

If you consider that it is easy to solve a boot problem by referring a hexadecimal code and a library file, well...

Aside from that consider that the forum feed is livid at certain times, so your post could (maybe) be not even make the first page when posted (only 10 reads after 2 weeks when I read it).

Sounds like you got a answer from gateway, care to share so other people will know the answer?
